Anne T. Donahue
Anne T. Donahue is sort of like your best friend and career envy rolled into one. She gets to spend her time writing about everything from Marc Jacobs, to Kimmy K, to anything else that is trending. Her work is published on the most popular media outlets around—her thoughts gracing Refinery 29, Zooey Deschannel’s brainchild HelloGiggles, Canadian landmark National Post, and pretty much any other publication that people flock to for all things current. But even with all of this success, this pop culture writer still remains humble and hilarious. A quick glance at her Twitter and her newsletter and you’ll be crying tears of joy at her commentary. You can even stay up to date on what’s trending with her MTVnews column. Either way, you will never be left disappointed when reading Anne T Donahue’s take on things. 😂
1. In one sentence, explain what you do.
I write about pop culture and current events and my opinions on the internet and sometimes also in magazines and newspapers.
2. What has been the biggest surprise in your career so far?
That I have a career at all! I only just started calling what I do “my career” because for so long it’s felt like a trick — like if everyone realizes how much I love writing, they’re going to take it away from me or I’ll be discovered as a person who really cares about her work. But really, I can’t believe people want to read what I write. I can’t believe people I respect and like want me to write for publications they’re in charge of. I’m surprised any time a cool thing happens. I was surprised you wanted to feature me on this site! I just hide my surprise with a really loud voice and bold declarations about my own confidence.
3. What is your biggest challenge these days?
I’m constantly worrying about whether or not I’m doing enough. I had the flu [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][the other] week and spent most of it freaking out about getting behind and wasting time. I’m usually in a constant state of wanting to do more. Or worrying that if I don’t do more, I won’t get to do anything at all. Which I think a lot of people in the arts deal with. Everybody just wants to do their best! And everybody is also secretly worried their best isn’t good enough. But that’s a lifelong challenge, I’m pretty sure.
4. What celebrity would you invite for drinks?
This is a super difficult question because my heart is torn. On the one hand, I’d love to have tea with Judi Dench because I’m obsessed with her. And on the other, I want to sit down with Lin-Manuel Miranda because I’m sure he could explain how to work hard/achieve cool things in a way that doesn’t make either seem terrifying.
5. How do you typically end your day?
By making sleep hygienists freak out. I usually fall asleep in front of Veep or Mary Tyler Moore reruns after I’ve scrolled through Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram. Then I wake up about seven or eight hours later. I can’t stress how glamorous I am as a person.
